Under the Dome: the week that was.

A few items of interest from under the Golden Dome last week:

Kudos to Minority Leader Christopher Rants. Christopher made a great argument about the Democrats’ true intentions in implementing an effective state wide smoking ban in restaurants and bars while allowing an exception for the smokiest of the bar and restaurant genre-casinos. What could be better evidence of the state’s utter dependence on gambling than the pathetic hypocrisy of the casino exception.

Our
Senate leadership offered a great economic plan for Iowa. I don’t think anyone could argue that the Iowa, in general, and Polk County, specifically, home building and construction industries need stimulus right now. (Most of the Des Moines banking and real estate communities would agree). The GOP plan addresses the critical need to prevent a collapse of the Des Moines, Cedar Rapids/Iowa City and Quad Cities economies while addressing the longer term needs of the labor force.

The Senate plan looks brilliant compared to the
grossly irresponsible, pay for failure, education tax plan the Democrats are inflicting on Iowa. The Democrat “education” bill proposes both a permanent increase in the sales tax-hurting retailers, especially the locally owned shops that already struggle to compete with WalMart and the Democrat Dayton Hudson chains and authorizes massive property tax increases that attack the struggling housing and construction economies in Iowa’s urban areas.

Gov. Culver appointed
Brian Quirk’s dad to Electrical Examining Board. Brian is a Democrat from Chickasaw County who acquired a lot of bipartisan respect last year for withstanding the outrageous bullying of the Democrat House leadership in the “Fair Share” debate. The appointment is a pretty gracious move by the Big Lug. Under different circumstances TRS would view the appointment as a bribe. However, anyone with the integrity to resist all the Democrat special interest pressure (also known “union thuggery”) is probably going to resist a bribe. Of course, the Dems are going to attack your right to work again this year so we’ll get a chance to test my theory. For now, let's give a good guy the benefit of the doubt.

Finally, Ako Samad, the radical Democrat from Des Moines, invited a Muslim cleric to offer House's morning prayer one daylast week. It seems that one of the phrases used was also thought to be a Jihadist’s battle cry. If so, talk about your cultural insensitivity. I wonder if a transcript is available?

As always, there are comings and goings under the Big Golden Dome. Feel free to share yours.

Here's an unofficial transcript of the prayer:

Any dirtbag who would accuse Mr. Khan (who is one of the nicest guys I've ever met) of being a jihadist terrorist should have their head examined. Give it a freakin' rest (it makes you look like a bunch of religious bigots).

Whitver should have delivered a pig's head when he went to Samad's house.

Okay, 9:48:

Since you think the fact that being "nice" is a disqualifier for terrorist activity, let's look at the positive aspects of some other nutjobs.

Stalin was, by all accounts, a gracious and congenial host to foreign dignitaries. He couldn't have killed 30 million people. Too nice.

John Wayne Gacy was a homeowner and he had a hobby. Too normal. Couldn't have been a serial killer.

Hitler liked dogs and was a strict vegetarian. Couldn't have killed anyone because he liked animals so much.

Yasser Arafat, when not buggering the kinder, smiled in front of the cameras and condemned terrorism in Hebrew. He couldn't have invented the suicide bomb or been a terrorist.

Nelson Mandela is a widely liked and respected figure in leftist circles. He couldn't have invented "necklacing" of political opponents. He is too kind, warm and generous for that.

Kraig Paulsen, your minority whip, took a $10,000 from the casinos.

Look at all those deleted comments that kick off this thread. Must be the work of those hateful Democrats for Edwards, don't you think?

I agree with 8:00. After all, what was Billy Boy doing in South Carolina? Oh yea, reminding us that the democrat party was the original birthplace of political racism and continues to be the home of political racism.
