Here's some news out today. It reminds me of our own Iowa Legislature. This one is Michigan. This is what the Democrat controlled legislature is doing. When will OUR students get their own government provided MP3? -- The Detroit News
We have come to the conclusion that the crisis Michigan faces is not a shortage of revenue, but an excess of idiocy.
Facing a budget deficit that has passed the $1 billion mark, House Democrats Thursday offered a spending plan that would buy a MP3 player or iPod for every school child in Michigan.
The Democrats, led by their increasingly erratic speaker Andy Dillon of Redford Township, also pledge $100 million to make better downtowns.
Their plan goes beyond cluelessness.
Democrats are either entirely indifferent to the idea that extreme hard times demand extreme belt tightening, or they are bone stupid. We lean toward the latter.
We say that because the House plan also keeps alive, again without specifics, the promise of tax hikes.
The range of options, according to Rep. Steve Tobocman, D-Detroit, includes raising the income tax, levying a 6 percent tax on some services, and taxing junk food and soda.
We wonder how financially strained Michigan residents will feel about paying higher taxes to buy someone else's kid an iPod.
That they would include such frivolity in a crisis budget plan indicates how tough it will be to bring real spending reform to Michigan.

...but officials added that Edwards will participate in a different debate hosted by the institute and CNN.
"We believe there's just no reason for Democrats to give Fox a platform to advance the right-wing agenda while pretending they're objective," said Jonathan Prince, Edwards' deputy campaign manager.

NEW YORK (AP)—Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton has stepped off the presidential campaign trail for a few days, heading to the Dominican Republic to spend the weekend at the swank Punta Cana Resort and Spa.
She was joined by her husband, former President Bill Clinton, and their daughter Chelsea at the home of fashion designer Oscar de la Renta, a Dominican native.
The Clintons have vacationed numerous times at the Caribbean resort since 2000, when Bill Clinton was closing out his second term in the White House.
Here's what you get on Fox that you don't get on CNN. A debate! You get one side trying to convince the other. It's interesting and newsworthy.
For those democrats that are so afraid of their own thoughts that they can't watch Fox News, here's an example.
Geraldo Rivera is by no stretch of the imagination a republican or a conservative. He's a big big lib from the ABC News school - a product of the radical 60's culture.
O'Reilly is a conservative. They both work for Fox.
The two of them got into a very interesting debate on illegal immigration.
I think Larry King was on CNN at the same time. Not sure. Pablum Pablum. --- Bill O'Reilly and Geraldo Rivera said Friday there were no hard feelings after they engaged in a shouting match unusual even for a cable opinion program where the volume is frequently set to loud.
No chairs flew and no noses were broken. But the finger-pointing verbal duel over illegal immigration on Fox News Channel's "The O'Reilly Factor" Thursday night became a water-cooler topic the next day.
Shouting match really sounds like a productive "debate." I admit I don't get to watch any news channels as much as I would like to. But when I do catch CNN, they always have both sides included and often have very good, actual discussions. I would say the profit-seeking, capitalistic mainstream media outlets are, in my opinion, bending over backwards trying to be fair and balanced.
