Quick Democrat Debate Recap

The Dems debated again tonight. The event was, well, most uneventful. However, near the end, Russert landed hard body blows on both Democrats-in and of itself the most atypical of MSNBC broadcasting techniques.

First, the Drama of Obama was asked about breaking his written promise to accept only public financing during the “general election” phase of the FEC cycle. The Drama dissembled with a degree of legerdemain previously found only in the lexicon of President Clinton. It was Obama’s single worst moment of the campaign. The most troubling aspect was the ease with which Obama lapsed into deceit and dissimilation-it undercuts much of the premise of his campaign.

As much as TRS is pulling for Evita to sufficiently close the race to get the Dems to a convention fight, sadly she was not to be out sleazed. When asked about her refusal to release her marital tax returns, particularly significant because so much of President Clinton’s income comes from Middle Eastern interests, Hillary’s deceit was ludicrous. In the end, she actually blamed President Bush (Dubya not Poppy) for the failure to release the documents because the current President has to authorize the release of Clinton era White House archives.

Aside from the complete lack of the relationship between the Clintons’ current tax returns and her White House archival documents, do even Democrats believe that George W. Bush is slowing the release of Hillary’s (and Bill’s for that matter) White House documents? Des Moines Dem, rf, Spotlight-are you with me on at least this one? I think the Bubba/Dubya/Poppy relationship is such that Bill could pick up the phone, dial the Oval Office (and I’m guessing Dubya takes the call) and ask brother George if he could declassify some archival papers for Hillary.

The funniest moment occurred when the genius, the smartest woman in the history of the United States, and quite possibly Western, if not world, civilization couldn’t name the hand picked successor of Vlad “the Impaler” Putin. After stumbling over several different versions of a name roughly similar to the correct answer, Hillary ultimately settled on “whatever“. Sorry Senator with 35 years experience, the correct answer was Dmitry Medvedev. The liberal press guffawed through the 2004 election over President Bush’s inability to recall the President of Pakistan’s name back in 2000. We’ll see how tonight’s Jeopardy gaffe is treated in the liberal press.

Wow, these guys could be flattened next November if we play our hand with aggression, innovation and the courage of our conservative convictions.

matthews just ragged Republican Presidents as "white guys with one or two syllable names. Ford, Bush, Reagan".

Somehow the distinction between the white guys Johnson, Carter, Clinton was too subtle for me.

Sporer, did Hillary really fail the bar exam?

One additional note: On your tax return you do not list the names, or countries of origin of the sources of your income.

Just keep thinking Butch.

Spotlight here--

I'm guessing that anyone can release their own tax papers anytime they want. I didn't see the debate, so I don't know if Hillary was disengenuous or not.

I do know this: No candidate before Obama had ever released tax returns prior to winning the nomination. McCain has not.

So why pick on her? It's just sexism at work.

Middle East connections, my foot! Ever hear of that book "House of Bush, House of Saud" ????

Do you remember who let the bin Laden plane leave the US after 9-11-01? Middle East connnections, indeed!

As for the other old WH papers you want to see, I wonder:

Were you so agitated when King George II slapped "Secret" on the about to be released papers of his father? Or is this a case of the Pot calling the Kettle "BLACK!"

Spotlight wondering--

Can you locate the alledged written statement of Obama on public financing? Please post it here if you find it.

And what about McCain's flouting of the McCain-Feingold law? Did he get on the Ohio ballot without gathering any signatures? Yes, he did, because he was in the public campaign system and his law provides for free ballot access. Now he says he's not in the system. Double Talk Express!

arthur, yes they do. the form is called "1099" by our friends at revenue.

spotlight. actually hillary's claim is years of service in the WH qualify her for the big job. Since she didn't serve in a public office the only record of the content of her service is contained in WH archival materials that she and Bubba have kept secret for the last eight years. its an issue unique to hillary. your examples have no more relationship to hillary's situation than do the archival materials have to her current tax returns.

the bin Laden plane? please avoid those black helicopters.

my point, which was humor, is the ability of hillary, and apparently you, to blame W for everything and anything, even when its clearly something that is entirely, or at least largely, in the control of hill and brother bill. she's such a mindless partisan that she just cannot tell the truth: neither Poppy, Bubba or Dubya have any intention of releasing all of their WH papers as long as they live-like virtually all modern predecessors.

Spotlight..

Obama's statement on public financing was made in a survey response he submitted to the Midwest Democracy Network...to the following question:

"If you are nominated for President in 2008 and your major opponents agree to forgo private funding in the general election campaign, will you participate in the presidential public financing system?"

Obama's Answer--Yes. Obama then followed his simple answer with this missive..

"In February 2007, I proposed a novel way to preserve the strength of the public financing system in the 2008 election. My plan requires both major party candidates to agree on a fundraising truce, return excess money from donors, and stay within the public financing system for the general election. My proposal followed announcements by some presidential candidates that they would forgo public financing so they could raise unlimited funds in the general election. The Federal Election Commission ruled the proposal legal, and Senator John McCain (R-AZ) has already pledged to accept this fundraising pledge. If I am the Democratic nominee, I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee to preserve a publicly financed general election."

Spotlight..if that isn't a pledge..I don't know what is...

Thanks, Cedar,

Let's look closely now at these phrases:

"My plan requires both major party candidates to agree on a fundraising truce . . ."

and

"I will aggressively pursue an agreement with the Republican nominee . . ."

So let's see what they can agree on. Obama is too smart to just say "Public financing? OK, whatever." He knows about all the ways to get around the law with 527s for Swiftboat lies, etc. So he wants an agreement that covers all the bases. I support that effort regarding the general election.

But as for the primary races, McCain is public, Obama is privately financed, at least in the straight talk world. So McCain is about done spending, since he has reached his spending limit. If he turns to 527s, he turns away from straight talk.

Hush

Don't mention the bin Laden plane.

BTW, it wasn't a helicopter.

I think it's so funny every time Bushbots accuse liberals of believing in black helicopters. They must not know the same history of the allusion that i remember and that you can verify at wikipedia.

Black helicopters were a figment of the militia movement's imagination that the New World Order was sending in UN troops to take over the USA, enforce the Endangered Species Act, etc.

Those people were not liberals. Black helicopters do not bedevil liberals. Keep reminding yourself: Liberals are reality-based. We don't think that either helicopters or muslims or commies or Mexicans are coming to GET US!!!

RIP William F. Buckley.

How appropriate that Buckley died this morning. Conservatism died on Super Tuesday.

Buckley is the one conservative who is absolutely irreplaceable.

“The two-party system presupposes an adversary relationship between the two parties. That there is no such relationship in New York Mr. Lindsay makes especially clear when he proposes as running mates members of the Liberal and Democratic Parties. Mr. Lindsay’s Republican Party is a sort of personal accessory,. . . indifferent to the historic role of the Republican Party as standing in opposition to those trends of our time that are championed by the collectivist elements of the Democratic Party.”

These choices slaughter me. This Badrake Alabama is an empty talking suit, McCain is a good guy but he's just too damn old and wishy washy. And for the love of God neither Badrake nor Jack Mc is going to kiss Wall Street ass to the tune that's going to help my portfolio. I swear to God that leaves us with Hillary. And you know damn good and well that broad can kiss some Wall Street ass for the simple fact of the matter as to what she'll gain when she passes the Campaign plate. How the hell did it come to this? Dammit Sporer do something will you? Shit!

Ever the braintrust. The IRS, of course, would have copies of Clinton's 1099 forms but they are not required to be submitted with 1040's and therefore if Hillary were to release her tax forms only there would be no reference as to where the income came from. For public consumption she wouldn't even have to submit W-2's.

Geez! Are you sure you are a lawyer?

Damn, I wish I would get it together. 1099s are a function of US law. There is no legal requirement for foreign entities to supply them. Even if there were, how would we enforce it?

Damn, you and I are even dumber than I thought.

Please Ted, you use the phrase "mindless partisan" like it is a bad thing. Without mindless partisanship, you would have to get a real job.

People like you in both parties are the primary problem with our political system, and you know it.

Well well well...Dr. Sebring. Perhaps you doth protested too much against Jonothan.

Hmmm...me thinks you knew this was coming out because you already knew the numbers the night you threw a fit on public TV for all of us to see. It's interesting to watch that video again on the Register site after reading this article.
