Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was the first guest. Normally I describe the appeasers as "Petainists" after the French WW1 hero who became an appeaser and later collabarator with the Nazis in WW2. There is something worse, and that's a Qusiling, 'cause Petain had least had a patriotic and heroic past before his fear of war sank him into treason. Reid's career is one long tale of cowardice and corruption.
Dingy Harry came on talking about simple majority votes and the importance of obtaining one for the Democrats defeat at any price agenda in the Senate. I wonder why Schieffer failed to ask about Harry’s new position on this issue of filibusters; it seems to have changed with the change of his status from minority to majority leader.
Schieffer pressed Reid hard about his refusal to allow any votes on any bills other than his defeat at any price Iraq bill. Reid said he would allow votes; although he is the one who pulled every other bill from the Senate floor. Reid said Republicans were blocking those votes, although he is hard pressed to explain how that works when he sets the agenda in the Senate. Maybe that is why Dingy Harry’s public approval is about half of George W. Bush’s, usually in the teens.
In his discussion of the Feingold Censure Resolution Reid simply retreated into the same delusional Bush bashing, concluding with the definitive statement “worst President we’ve ever had”-nothing but a stream of ad hominyms. When asked to discuss the problems with Pakistan Reid responded by bringing up Tora Bora and the invasion of Iraq. So what would you do about Pakistan-Dingy Harry doesn’t know about that issue.
Harry does think that the U.S. presence in Iraq is causing the conflict. When asked about the possibility of cataclysmic violence Harry just responded that scores of people are dying already. Yes, scores but not scores of thousands Senator, but in the vile world of Harry Reid, what the hell’s the difference if it means you can gains political power at home.
Olympia Snowe, a Republican from the Democrat state of Maine, was the second guest. She seemed to focus on the need for consensus and accommodation. That’s helpful if you don’t have any principles or belief about the need for action. Unfortunately we are at war and schedules and consensus don’t always work when someone else is trying to kill you.
Snowe emphasized that we will need to change strategy in Iraq in September, pretty much regardless of what the generals say. Now there’s a good idea, stop victory in its tracks for political or temporal reasons. It football season, we can’t be spending time on something like war. Olympia is in a tough spot, her state is extremely liberal and she’s not. A big show or Presidential campaigning for his war policy would help Senators like Snowe, Collins, Specter, and Smith so its time to get on Air Force One and start campaigning for your policy like you did for your job Mr. President.
Read this biography of Vidkun Quisling , and then try and find the difference between the cowardly Norwegian politician who turned his country over to the Nazis and Harry Reid, the cowardly American politician who seeks to turn his country over to the jihadists, except degree of success (thus far).

There are treasonous Republicans too, Teddy.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is viewed favorably by 27% of American voters and unfavorably by 43%. Those figures include 7% with a Very Favorable opinion and 20% with a Very Unfavorable view.
Mcquisling (a Norwegian citizen) was executed by the Norwegians for collaborating with the enemy.
Petain, (a French citizen) was executed by the French for collaborating with the enemy.
What SHOULD WE DO about Reid and Pelosi? Don't we always follow the lead of the europeans, especially the French, in these matters?

While most Americans say the government should do more to combat poverty, most also say that it’s too easy for people to receive welfare payments in the United States.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 53% of Americans say it’s too easy to get welfare payments while just 22% say it’s too hard.
We all know if W had “D” behind his name, he would have been impeached many times over by the R Congress and would already have been executed for treason.
Per Rasmussen today, only 32% believe that raising the minimum wage will reduce poverty.
The earlier survey found that 45% believe enforcing immigration laws will reduce poverty
Hoping to capitalize on the belief that more should be done to fight poverty, former North Carolina Senator John Edwards (D) focused his Presidential campaign on poverty issues last week.
However, just 28% of Likely voters were able to identify Edwards as the candidate focusing on poverty issues.
Fifteen percent (15%) thought it was Illinois Senator Barack Obama who focused attention on poverty while 13% thought it was New York Senator Hillary Clinton.
A plurality of 34% was not sure which candidate focused on the issue.
Just 19% of voters said they were following “news stories about a presidential candidate drawing attention to the issue of poverty in America” Very Closely.
The current survey finds that 30% of American adults believe the Associated Press has a liberal bias and only 12% believe it leans the other way.
Local television news is viewed as having a liberal bias by 30% and a conservative bias by 17%.
MSNBC is seen as being a bit more to the left—33% say it has a liberal bias and 13% say the opposite.
For CNBC, 29% say it has a liberal bias and 14% say a conservative bias.
Earlier releases showed that Americans tend to believe the major broadcast networks, CNN, and NPR have a liberal bias. Fox News is seen as having a bias in the other direction. In print, the New York Times, Washington Post, and local newspapers were also seen as having a liberal bias.

Eighty-six percent (86%) of Americans oppose a proposal to increase gasoline taxes by 50 cents a gallon. A Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that just 8% favor such a tax hike.
Just 17% of Americans believe that such a gasoline tax hike would have a positive impact on the economy. Seventy-nine percent (79%) believe it would have a negative impact, including 64% who believe the impact would be Very Negative.
Those figures are similar to the generic belief that tax hikes are bad for the economy.
Generally speaking, just 13% of Americans believe that tax hikes help the economy.
Sixty-three percent (63%) believe they hurt the economy. That view is strongly held and has changed little since Election 2004.
The possibility of a substantial gasoline tax increase was raised last week on C-Span by House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman John Dingell (D-Mich.)
Dingell opposes a proposal that recently passed the Senate mandating an increase in fuel efficiency over the next decade.
That energy bill passed the Senate with virtually no public notice as it was voted on during the midst of the struggle over immigration reform.
Polling at the time found most Americans support the concept of requiring auto manufacturers to build cars with better gas mileage.
One reason hiking the gas tax generates such strong opposition is that consumers would react to higher gas prices by cutting back on entertainment expenses, vacations, and major purchases. An earlier survey found that half would cut back on groceries if the price of gas jumps a dollar a gallon
Fyi, Dingell brought up the gas tax issue in an effort to kill it.
As a typical Michigan D, Dingell is in the domestic auto industry and UAW’s pocket. His stances are much in line with most R’s in Congress. No to tough fuel efficiency requirements. No to gas tax hike. No to anything to change status quo.
As stated here, most Americans are for higher fuel efficiency standards. That is a no-brainer. Even higher gasoline tax could work if it was made revenue neutral.
if it comes out of my pocket and is given to someone else....it's not revenue neutral to me.
New York Rep. Charles Rangel has been raising funds from taxpayers and corporations for a center in Harlem to be named after a prominent U.S. congressman – Charles Rangel.
The Democrat has quietly raised nearly $25 million for the Charles B. Rangel Center for Public Service at City College, located in a four-story Harlem building and aimed at steering low-income and minority students into politics, the New York Post reports.
Last week Rangel – chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee – pushed through a $2 million "earmark” in the House to serve as seed money for the project.
Feingold: "I'm shocked by the administration, in particular the president's response to the November election.
Usually, when presidents are repudiated in elections, they say, 'Well, maybe I ought to reassess.'
I see the Switchbak people took a break from bombing abortion clinics to call into Jan Mickelson.
First, Switchback disavowed the endorsement of Kansas Right to Life when he first ran for Senate. Then, in a dramatic reversal, he wanted to send in government shock troops in a Waco-style raid to prevent local law enforcement from enforcing a legitimate court order and put a feeding tube into a vegetable.
Switchback is a thug.
I'm watching the yOUtUBE DEBATE. Chuck Hagel is their favorite republican.
what is your stand on reparations:
edwards - no, but...blacks regardless of income can't make it on their own. They need John to save the day.
Obama - dodged. we need more money for schools. those are reparations that will make a difference.
kucinich - YES! The only democrat to say he was FOR reparations.
how do you stop hurricanes from attacking black people?
dodd - everyone at fema had a meeting and decided not to help the black people in new orleans because they are black. this wouldn't have happend if they were white people.
richardson - politics made the difference. bush only helped his friends because he doesnt like black people.
obama isn't black enough?
obama says: i can't get a cab either cause i'm black so I have my credentials. i'm committed to close the disparities. I have a plan!
clinton: (wow, tightly held facelift going on) I'm not running as a woman. Some of my best friends are women. we have big challenges. we need experience to handle problems. little girls and boys will be the most thrilled when I win.
edwards: i want to answer a different question. implores the audience not to vote for him if they won't vote for hill because she's a woman or obama because he's black. Im the most magnanimous one to refuse your vote. there are more women than men in proverty, so I'm the first woman president. i know chicks better than chicks know themselves. I'm the boldest. I'm the best advocate. I know women because lizzie told me so.
clinton: wtf? I got to vote on minimum wage (where all women must reside). women are also very sick. Minimum wage and being healthy only apply to women, after all.
gay marriage:
kucinich; YES YES, a thousand times yes! Our constitution says so.
Dodd: supported DOM. if my kids were gay, what then? yes, they can have civil union, but not marriage.
richardson: i would do what is achievable (?) civil unions. He would eliminate don't ask dont' tell. He would make more hate crimes legislation.
gay marriage - part 2
why use religion to deny gay americans their equal rights?
edwards: he has personal conflict on the issue (leadership, better figure it out). He personally has been on a journey. He has no idea, but he's trying. His wife said something different and I'm afraid she's going to yell at me.
the youtuber that asked is live in the audience and has afollowup.
Edwards did not asnwer the question:
Edwards: repeats he's on a journey. He is sweating. He can't be clear.
what will you do about darfur? what does george clooney advise? Will you use troops?
richardson: I've been there. I've heard stories. Diplomacy is the answer! Leadership is the answer. No troops! We need China to fix it. Send UN troops. Mostly Muslim UN troops. Not USA troops. Genocide is continuing, but diplomacy is fast enough! DIPLOMACY!!!!
Biden: Yes..now! Those kids will be dead by the time diplomacy has a chance. I've been there too. America has to do it and guess what, we can! (wow Joe..I'm breathless). Yes, Troops!!
Gravel: the problem is too deep. We haven't come to our responsibilies of our role. they are afraid of us. they dont' like us. it's our fault and we can't help until we purge our souls of our crimes.
clinton: move quickly to divest of our investments! We can do no fly zones as long as our troops are not in danger. no troops in darfur. The UN needs to do it. The African Union needs to do it. We can't help. We still have mutual funds making money. Fist things first.
ok...they just did the fake support the troops thing by higlighting death.....how inspiring. supporting the troops? NOT!
are we still watching the same blankin war? how do we pull out now?
obama; i opposed it from the start! we will be careful getting out by sending a clear message that there is no military solution (how many troops are ther killing the enemy every day? we need a diplomatic surge and making sure everyone is carrying their weight (will you spank them if they don't?). bring troops home NOW!
biden: only a political solution
is possible and he's the only one talking about it. bring the troops home dang quick. tell the truth (?)
about that mandate from a woman that has a son in combat. (an objective opinion, I'm sure)
clinton: thank you for your service. since 2006 they've all been trying to set a timeline. there is no military solution and the iraqi's won't do a policital solution, so I guess there are no solutions. we have questions but we have no solutions. we just want to come home and get out our flower children outfits back on...back to the future!
dodd: keep our nation safe...by bringing everyone home! We need to set a time certain. we must get them to LIKE us! robustly pursue diplomacy! Get engaged in the region. Darfur is related to Iraq..we have no moral leadership! (from the party that has as their hero the accused rapist serial adulterer).
richardson; No residual forces. NO TROOPSSSSSSS! Vietnam speak takes over. Quamire - Tet Offensive
Vietnam question comes up next. how coincidental:
Gravel tries to defend statement that viet nam soldiers died in vain.
obama: we can't ask how to get out of iraq now because we didn't ask it back then. so we have to take responsiblity for that. when obama commits troops (when George Clooney says to) he'll be dang sure they aren't dying in vain. He'll guarantee that the intelligence is good, by god.
edwards: no they didn't die in vain. The real question is how to stop the war. the iraqi parliament ought to be shot. we need to turn up the heat on bush. it's the only way. we must FORCE him to change. FORCE HIM!
how about women signing up for the draft?
dodd: yes, women ought to serve to by registering for selective service. it's not fair to men. he believes in forced national service kind a like those hitler's youth folks, I guess. Everyone MUST SERVE THE GOVERNMENT!!!!!!!
Clinton: SERVE THE GOVERNMENT! SERVE ME! national service is good for the government. what's good for the government is good for me! (and the money kept rolling in...evita)
THEY ALL WANT NATIONAL FORCED GOVERNMENTAL SERVICE. Women should be drafted too! What's the difference? Men and women are the same dammit!
I can't really listen to hill. I keep being distracted by that overboxed forehead. My god...how weird is her waxy face! what did she just say?
hillary won't promise to meet with our enemies until diplomacy works. we need to get back to diplomacy, but I won't talk to iran until diplomacy works.
edwards; clinton is right. we won't meet with chavez, but we'll invite iran over for a BBQ. the real question is how to restore our moral leadership. (what do they mean by moral? it's lost on me)
What is the date certain for leaving and do you have children serving (from another parent)
dodd: pursue diplomacy. pull out the military when it's safe ??????? (isn't that what we are doing now?) he wants them out NOW. He advocates cutting off funding because he supports the troops.
richarson: 6 months, no residual troops. he accuses clinton of wanting 50,000 residual troops. We must HEAL Iraq. We can't shoot the bad guys, but we can HEAL them. No troops whatsoever.
biden: richardson is nuts (I agree). it's impossible to achieve what Richardson wants. Biden is th only one to vote for funding (maybe he aint' so bad after all). How can you in good conscience not support the safety gear these guys want even if one guy is still there?
Clinton: Biden is right. She's studied this after all (I couldn't pass the bar on the first try, but I'm the smartest human in the world after bill). move the troops out safely, orderly and carefully. it's complicated (how is that different than now)
Kucinich: Text Peace....send a message to congress on your phone. That's tough! let's get real. really, let's get real.
who was favorite teacher and why....
I agree with Edwards and Clinton. These debates aren't serious.
NCLB
Richardson would scrap it. The NEA told me to say so and they are the largest lobby and PAC of all the lobbies and PACs. I can't get the NEA and the Union endorsements unless I tell them I'll repeal NCLB. I'll emphasize science and math. I'll give more money to schools. I'll have new federal programs.
biden: i channelled paul wellstone as an advisor and then i checked with ted kennedy. We need more money for schools. we need smaller classrooms than we had during the one room schoolhouse days. we need more teachers. we should have a teacher in every pot. One teacher for each child!!!!
public vs private schools by THEIR kids.
Edwards sent his kids to public school so he could afford his 28,000 square foot home and those haircuts.
Clinton: Gee, we sent Chelsea to public school in arkansas, but was advised to go to private schools in DC.
Biden: my kids go to catholic school because someone in my family died. otherwise, my kids would go to public school.
dodd: his kids go to public schools
Kucinich. my mail order bride didn't come with kids. we had to order those separately. I'm sure i'll send them to public though when they arrive.
planned parenthood wants to know about the very personal family details of them teaching sex to their kids.
Edwards; Blushing...yea, uh yea, we uh yea, taught them about private places in an age appropriate manner as prescribed by the planned parenthood talking points.
obama: I want my kids to know if someone is doing something wrong to them! (wow, that differentiates him as a parent)..therefore, yes...I think we should teach sex education in kindergarten, in an age appropriate manner as prescribed by planned parenthood, of course.
Gravel just came out for the FAIR TAX! He relates this to global warming and, frankly, he's on to something about this. It's a use tax. Tax the use of energy rather than tax personal minimum wage income.
edwards: No nuclear energy. Don't liquify coal. We need to find something we don't already have and must invent something brand new. (how helpful for the short term)
obama; Nuclear is ok. (He's right). He'll just be better and meet with big oil more often than bush.
clinton: she's proposed a strategic energy fund by increasing gas prices even more to fund it. no nuclear. let's just plain ole figure it out dag gummit. if we do it right, it's a win win. (mensa calling)
voting integrity. how to stop cheating (only democrats convicted and serving time, by the way).
Richardson...we need less integrity. Same day registration. stop repressing minority voters (how do they do that, by the way?. is there a meeting of folks to figure out how to keep minorities from voting? really?) we need to find more voters. We need felons to vote. We need snowbirds to vote in Fl AND NY and AZ. We need non-citizens to vote. We need them ALLL!!!!!!
minimum wage: R U willing to serve your nation at minimum wage? Will you commit your children to work for minimum wage?
Dodd...no. I'm an advocate though for leadership.
Clinton: yes
Lots of backpedalling about how they'd work for minimum wage. Biden and kucinich vied for who is the most poor. they'd all work for minimum wage.
yea sure!
Social Security: Will you tax all income?
dodd: 2040 is drop dead. let's wait til then. let's tax all the income first and solve the problem later.
obama: yes, it's on the table. we must preserve Social security. We must have a bipartisan solution that I doh't know anything about right now, but once they let me know what they've decided, i'll let you know how i feel about it, after everyone else tells me how i should feel about it. I'll decide after that what to do about the single most important domestic issue facing americans today.
richarsons on SS. We must find a solution..
I'm giddy.
lower taxes
Biden - tax those people who have the poor taste to not be poor and need government assistance to survive.
alzheimers. diabetes. heart attacks. breast cancer. how will you fix chronic disease? how will you pay for my treatment?
obama: john and i disagree. john says mandate. obama says he has a plan. john has a plan. everyone has a plan. they are all different, but we all have plans. we are all beholden to lobbyists and that's why we can't do anything. until the lobbyists tell us what to do, we can't reveal our plan.
edwards: i had the first governnment plan. mine was FIRST dammit. I'm paying for everything and it won't cost you a cent because I've been on a poverty tour (gee, I prefer disneyworld in the summer), and now I know. I know poor people who can't even talk! When are we going to fix this? How long will it take for someone to tell us what to do to fix it?!!!!! We keep waiting! I don't know the answer either. I'm pissed too.
clinton: I'm going to respect everyone. even those without health insurance.
Dodd: stem cell research is going to fix diabetes under his watch. illegal immigrants get all benefits.
Richardson: Illegal immigrants get all benefits. No soda! Research!
the dynasty and the oxymoron of change: Bush/Clinton/Bush/Clinton
It's Bush's fault by getting elected per Clinton.
My husband was the best. If he was the best, I'm the best, right? After all, I have no identity of my own. I represent Bill's third term. I am not my own woman. I'm nothing without him. vote FOR ME AND GET BILL.....
God and Guns: (ISN'T IT ALWAYS ABOUT THAT...THEY ARE OBSESSED). What does IN GOD WE TRUST MEAN to you?
Biden: the coin is right.
views on religion:
edwards: we will embrace and lift up all americans even if they have a belief. It's important to him personally as he has a belief. as president though, he'll make no decision based on his own personal faith belief. (he really said that. it's a quote. OMG)
obama: I really believe in separation of church and state. we'll have values..some values that come from somewhere but which we all have in common, but we'll decide each year where they come from after consulting the review board after they've reviewed all the proposals submitted. trust me, it will be fair.
Guns: Biden just confused Diane Fienstein and Barbara Boxer.
they really hate that. that's worse than wearing the same dress. I predict nail scratches on Joes' face by Monday.
edwards just proved that he's really a woman and lizzie is a man. When asked what he likes and dislikes about the candidate standing next to him, he commented on Hillary's jacket as something he might not wear himself.
Did he really spend my time on fashion critique?
omg!!! he really may be the first female candidate for president.
Biden took my time to lust after kuciniches wife as his favorite thing about Kucinich.
OMG!!!
It's reminiscent of Jimmy Carter's lust in his heart comment. Geez...maybe it wasn't just Clinton having very low morals. He is just the poor sucker who got caught!
Not very Presidential at all. Just a reunion of the sex, drugs and rock and roll class of 1968.
Hillary gave an explanation I've never heard before for sending Chelsea to private school in Washington.
"I was advised…that the press would never leave her alone bcause it was a public school," she said.
It's a perfectly reasonable answer, and it may not be the first time she's given it. But here's what the Times reported back when the decision was made:
In effect, Mr. Stephanopoulos said the Clintons had made a parental decision, not a Presidential one. They chose a school purely on the basis of what they as parents thought best for their daughter, setting aside whatever symbolic effect the decision would have. The last recent President with a school-age child, Jimmy Carter, sent his daughter, Amy, to Washington public schools.
"They didn't reject public schools," Mr. Stephanopoulos said. "The schools in the District of Columbia and across the country are good schools, and Governor Clinton supports the public school system, as he has throughout his term as Governor and will continue as President. What they did was choose as a family Sidwell Friends. It's a good choice."
He said the question of where the Secret Service would find it easiest to protect Chelsea was not an issue in the Clintons' decision.
The Clintons said in a statement that "after many family discussions and careful consideration" they had chosen Sidwell, because "as parents, we believe this decision is best for our daughter at this time in her life based on our changing circumstances."
Friends of the Clintons said today that the decision was based on their conviction that they simply would not sacrifice their daughter's education to make a political point.
UPDATE: Indeed, she's given the explanation before. In her book, in fact, as I've apparently forgotten.
UPDATE: And here's the quote from Living History:
“Jackie [Kennedy] gave invaluable advice about how to deal with my loss of personal privacy, and she told me what she had done to protect her children, Caroline and John. Providing Chelsea with a normal life would be one of the biggest challenges Bill and I faced, she told me. We had to allow Chelsea to grow up and even make mistakes, while shielding her from the constant scrutiny she would endure as the daughter of a President. … Already, Bill and I had taken a measure of the public’s interest in Chelsea and the national fascination with a child growing up in the White House. Our decision about where to send Chelsea to school had inspired passionate debate inside and outside the Beltway, largely because of its symbolic significance. I understood the disappointment felt by advocates of public education when we chose Sidwell Friends, a private Quaker school, particularly after Chelsea had attended public schools in Arkansas. But the decision for Bill and me rested on one fact: Private schools were private property, hence off-limits to the news media. Public schools were not. The last thing we wanted was television cameras and news reporters following our daughter throughout the school day, as they had when President Carter’s daughter, Amy, attended public school.” [Living History, pgs. 135-136]
(CNN) — Sure, what the candidates say is important, but body languange can also make an important impression on voters.
A body language expert, Jo Ellan Dimitrius, studied all of the candidates throughout the two-hour debate and decided that Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-New York, won the battle of the body language.
Sen. Clinton stood confidently behind the podium and kept her hands on top of the lecturn, rather than nervously grabbing onto the sides, Dimitrius observed.
According to Dimitrius, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, also had a strong performance by using confident hand gestures and keeping consistant eye contact with the audience.
During the questions about gay marriage, former Sen. John Edwards, D-North Carolina, had a nervous look, and he put his hands in his pockets, which is also a classic sign of nervousness, Dimitrius said.

CNN) — Univision reporter Maria Elena Salinas told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer after the debate that she was “disappointed that there was not more talk and not more debate on the immigration issue.”
Salinas said that there are millions of Hispanic voters in the United States that “were hoping to hear a little bit more from the candidates on these different issues that affect the hispanic community.”
–CNN Associate Producer Natalie Apsell
(CNN) — Who kept talking about the future? Who kept talking about the past? Who had the most harsh words for their fellow candidates? And who wins for politeness?
CNN Senior Political Analyst Bill Schneider has the numbers:
Bill Richardson uttered the phrase “What I will do” a total of 16 times, followed by Barack Obama (15 times) and Chris Dodd (11 times).
Hillary Clinton led the field in saying “What I have done” 11 times, followed by Joe Biden (9 times) and Dodd (7 times).
Clinton, from New York, was asked by another voter how she defines the word "liberal."
"It originally meant you were for freedom," Clinton responded. "I prefer the word 'progressive'.
I consider myself a modern progressive [who is for] individual rights and freedoms.
We are better as a society when we are working together."
