Real Civil Rights History

PART 1

Let's all take a minute and appreciate the 150 year Republican contributions to civil rights in America. An excellent history is available at http://policy.house.gov/2005_calendar/history.cfm, a publication of the House Republicans.

Its a great read, but it overlooks a few things. Let's see, Republican Theodore Roosevelt used Federal power to break the back of the Klan and dined at the White House with Booker Washington while Democrat Woodrow Wilson screened "Birth of a Nation" in the White House, and then spoke approvingly of its content.

Democrat governors stood in the doorways of schools when Republican President Dwight Eisenhower federalized their National Guards and forcibly implemented the desegregation decisions of the Republican Supreme Court.

Let's put the lie to the urban myth of "Nixon's Southern Strategy". Nixon won a few southern states in the 1968 election, not by appealing to segregationists, Democrat George Wallace had that constituency locked up, running on a straight segregationist ticket and all, but by holding Republican minorities in those states together. Nixon won those states by pluralities down in the 30-40 percent range because Wallace and Humphrey split the Democrat majority vote.

Why have we allowed the liberals in politics, the press and academia to define racism as opposition to affirmative action and the welfare state? Hope you can contribute some more examples 'cause if you've had it, help fight the culture war on the message front!

PART 2

Rumsfeld is the biggest stud in America!

Will we be seeing your thoughts on The Big Game in a few weeks?

And perhaps you can tell everyone the story of the ISU fan key-throwing event at Kinnick?

The classics never die.

Great post, Ted. Liberals like to believe their party represents minorities, but they always conveniently forget about history.

Abraham Lincoln freed the slaves.
The Civil Rights Act was passed with much higher numbers of Republican legislators.
Senator Byrd is an ex-Klansmen.

The list goes on and on. History can be very inconvenient for a liberal.

Didn't someone ask why Sporer isn't Lamberti or Nussle's spokesman?

Well, after this week's post if they didn't I'm asking now.

Another good reason to take back our schools from the union.

Sorry, neocons (emphasis on cons) the WARFARE state is the pacman of taxdollars, not the supposed wellfare state. True conservatives know this to be true. Check the expenditures on corporate wellfare. Compare the numbers. Prove me wrong if you can. You can't!

Theodore Roosevelt was probably one of the most liberal presidents America has ever had. Nixon was also a rather liberal president, and would never have gotten elected in the Republican Party of today. In addition, all of those Southern Democrats are now Republicans.

The fact of the matter is that it has been liberals who have consistently advanced the cause of civil rights in this country, and it has been liberals who are currently working to reduce poverty, improve inner-city public schools, and increase economic opportunity that will help bring minorities out of the disproportionate poor economic situation that many face now.

The advance of civil rights is more than just symbols and the circumstances of party affiliation at one point in history or another.

The democrats can't afford to let Black rise out of poverty. They'd lose their inventory.

Just exactly how have the liberals advanced the cause of civil rights? What have you done? Why is there not progress? What are your plans going forward?

How are you improving inner city schools? They've only gotten worse under the NEA. You give no choice to parents to leave failed schools. You insist they remain locked in these failed schools.

The social services systems seem to not be working either as they are constantly asking for more resources and more money because there are more and more victims to deal with. How can you say that's working if you can't fix anything and it just keeps getting worse?

Please point to a liberal success story.

Stop smoking CRACK and come back to reality unless the purpose of such a crazy statement was to prevoke gun splitting laughter.

On the other hand, I can now die knowing I've truly heard EVERYTHING!

How about some real liberals in the Democratic Party like General McClelland. You remember him, the one that could not decisively defeat General Lee despite overwhelming superiority and would not make "hard decisions." He wanted to be President and end the Civil War by dividing the country and letting the South keep the slaves in bondage. Like 99% of Democratic leaders he believed you could stick your head in the sand and you could always ride the fence. Thank God he was not our President or slavey might have continued forever!

Democrats just lie about the truth to the uneducated masses. It is enough to make you sick.

Hey kenbo, patrick said "liberals," not "Democrats." While the terms may be somewhat interchangable today, they weren't during the period you're talking about. The Democratic and Republican parties have changed considerably. No party can claim exclusive ownership over the advancement of minority rights in this country; the mantle has fallen on different parties during different periods. Your partisan perspective on history contains more truthiness than truth. The truth is that the Democratic Party lost southern white voters to the Republican Party because of the Democratic Party's opposition to Jim Crow and support of civil rights. That period represented a major shift between the political parties, as any political historian will tell you. To deny this is to be nothing more than a partisan shill.

That's BS. The D's passed and promoted JIm Crow laws and fought their removal. How do youe explain Al Gore Senior filibustering the civil rights act? How do you explain Democrat George Wallace in 1968 standing at the doors of a school preventing black kids from entering?

No, it's republicans who fought for the civil rights of blacks - not the Democrats.

And, democrats STILL haven't done anything for blacks. If I'm wrong about Democrats doing something for Blacks, please point to it.

Everyone should check out this website!

I find it funny that the Democratic party is seen at the party for the Black community, when in fact a lot of the so called helpful programs don't help minorities.

The only way to help someone off of thier feet is to provide an incentive to do so. It is unfortunate that we have created a culture of borderline socialism and re-distripution of wealth to those who haven't worked to get it. This only breaks down any incentive the people have to pull themselves out of poverty.

Al Gore Sr. was one of the Democrats that tried filibustered the 1964 Civil Rights Act and he is not an isolated example. The Democratic Party takes the Black vote for granted and thanks to their willing accomplices in the media and so called Black leadership - they get 95% of the vote.

The word, "Pathetic" is not descriptive enough for such a tragedy. Michael Moore loves such feeble minds........never mind any real look at history as he'll tell you all what to think.

Here's a slogan,
"Vote Democrat because you are too stupid to think for yourself!"

George Wallace wasn't a Democrat in 1968; he was an "American Idpendent Party" candidate. Wallace was pissed at the general movement towards desegregation that was embraced by members of both political parties. Wallace was a racist and a Democrat for most of his career. Just like many white southerners. They vote Republican now.

Anon 12:28, maybe you're right. We disagree about the best way to lift people out of poverty. I also suspect you have an ideological starting point for your position that has nothing to do with the practical results.

As for you Kenbo; "Vote Democrat because you are too stupid to think for yourself." That's racist. African-Americans are capable of thinking for themselves. And African-Americans obviously don't all vote one way or the other. But most vote Democrat, not because they are stupid, but because they have decided that Democrats are more likely to support programs that will help combat the stigmas of slavery that survive to this day. To claim that there is a grand conspiracy among Democrats to keep minorities down is rediculous, and it is the type of cliam that is destroying political discourse in this country.

Democrats are always for laws based on race. They still pass laws based on race. They always judge people by the color of their skin rather than the content of their character.

The defensive post from the liberal above demonstrates their institutional soft bigotry of low expectatations. How does one get over slavery after a few hundred years? It's been 40 years since the civil rights act was passed. How exactly is it that blacks do not have civil rights? How exactly is it that they can't vote without passage of the voting rights act? Didn't all those laws get repealed etc? Are there any laws that prevent blacks from voting? Are there any laws that prevent blacks from getting jobs?

Just exactly are the remnants of slavery that still exist today that require the democrat party to fix?

As for voting - 90+ percent of blacks vote democrat. What are they getting for all that loyalty?

What is the democrat agenda to remove the remnants of slavery that still exist today? What is your promise to them?

Anonymous said...

So, what is the economic development plan you have in mind for blacks? Sounds like you have to craft one that is different for blacks than the limousine democrats that have apparently have figured it out.

Please forgive the ignorance...what does the voting rights act entail? What happens if it didn't pass?

Doesn't the Voting Rights Act require printing ballots in language other than English?

Reason enough to vote against it.
