Breaking News: Iverson to Senate Staff position

In what can best be described as a highly unusual move, current RPI Chairman, and former Senate Majority Leader, Stewart Iverson has taken a position with the Senate campaign staff. Chairman Iverson will fill the opening created by Brent Oleson's decision to campaign for Supervisor in Linn County.

The move was announced earlier tonight at a Buena Vista County event by a member of our Senate caucus. Sources inform us that Iverson intends to retain his Party office as well.

Further developments to follow...............

I heard this earlier tonight and didn't believe it.

Is it possible to have drug the party lower in the gutter than Hoffmann?

Does anyone know who on the Republican Central Committee who is still there that voted for Iverson? Those are the people that should resign!

For God's sake Sporer, why don't you do something about this?

This is just nuts. I guess Stu can't get pay the bills on his 30k salary as party boss so he needs to double dip.

As for the SCC who voted for Iverson I would bet it looks something like:

gilbertson
ortega
scheffler
randall
anderson
houser

Wait a second Sporer...

You're publically stating someting that you heard 2nd hand from some unknown member of the "Senate Caucus" that you refuse to name.

Nothing official announcement from Iverson..or an official RPI announcement..

Spreading what may be nothing but rumors isn't a very good way to maintain party unity, Mr. Sporer...

So Stu is replacing the guy who was the architect of our senate minority status and helped toss him out of leadership? It will be interesting to see if even he can manage to do any worse.

This whole thing stinks to high heaven. This reminds me of the days when Chairman Grubbs hired himself as a consultant to the party in addition to his job as chairman, and created Victory Enterprises with the business he gave himself.

who hired stu? who is the person who made that decision? Is that the senate leader now? Is that weik or weitz or something like that?

Why would someone hire someone who already showed they can't win senate seats to the campaign staff in charge of winning senate seats??????????

Huh???

this sounds like something else is going on. this makes no logical sense at all if the project is called - rebuilding the party - and not - save Stu's ass.

How can he be a servant to one part of the party and the master to the rest of it?

This sounds about as reliable as the story of the RNSC giving Reed money. But that story was even better b/c it was not only that they would give him money but that they would be giving it to him by illegaly funneling it through a state entity. But I guess that was only perpetuated on WHO, not on an always accurate blog.

I checked on this. Sporer was right.

Can't believe it. What did the first poster say above, drug the party lower in the gutter than Ray Hoffmann?

Yes, yes he has.

The ignorance dripping from this thread is breathtaking.

This isn't a campaign position, it's senate staff who are state employees. Iverson would be dealing with the D staff and lobbyists on legislation. Doubt there's anyone in Iowa more qualified for that role.

And finally, I couldn't live off of 30k per year. I'm so glad you can, keep up that blog commenting!

Guess his "lobbying gig" was a crack dream. What self respecting former Senator would go and be subservant to his former colleagues? Wait, I guess Stewart Wetpants' Bortell Ranch money ran out.

War taking any job.

the party chair wasn't intended to be a full time job. i didn't realize that stu had no job at all. he was living on this as his full time job? he was working for $30k as his entire income?

then he takes a job where he is his own boss and his own subordinate - sorta kinda?

wow. we are in worse shape that i thought.

stu couldn't advance a noncontroversial license plate when he was the majority leader and they think he's the most effective guy to work with legislation?

wow.

o m g.

he didn't lift a finger to block ruth harkins nomination to the regents board, which is in charge of the most scandel ridden public institution we have right now (and that's saying alot).

he's the most effective person for this job?

wow.

what's the bortell reference? I went to bortell's camp as a kid. a favorite memory, but I'm not a guy.

What is the reference?

This is a $110,000.00 a year job. Who can blame him for taking it, the IPERS bump alone makes it worth it for his retirement.

You say alot about Stu, but stupid isn't one em.

Anonymous said...

nope - con-men and opportunists are usually not stupid.

Follow the money. I guess he never intended to lead the party. it was just a temporary landing pad paid for by us for his personal benefit until something better came along.

nice.

no one can blame stu for upgrading his situation monetarily. i don't think anyone knew that stew was unemployed and had no other skills the marketplace wanted to pay for, but....

he's the best person for the job? I wonder about that.

it smacks of cronyism and a lack of understanding that our party needs rebuilt.

turn the page.

time to moveon.

the 60's generation needs to retire.

What is incredible about this decision is the fact that Stu is going to work for Wieck - one of members who voted to remove Stu as leader back in '06.

This move is certainly about dollars for Stu but it remains to be seen if Gronstal will approve his salary at the top of the range. This job is temporary (through Nov.) in order to "assist" Wieck with candidates and fundraising (just a few other things Wieck is completely inept at)until Stu can land himself a job in the lobby. (Iverson landing a job in the lobby before next session is as probable as the Republicans regaining control of either chamber.) Unfortunately, I don't think this duo will be able to make up much ground at all for the Senate (before Nov) because Wieck has done squat to raise any money and the clock is ticking...

Stu has made his rounds to every deep pocket in this state begging for a job and has been turned away. It is quite pathetic.

I hope Wieck gets ousted the same way Iverson did. He has NO business being in a leadership role and this recent decision is demonstrative of how intellectually bankrupt he truly is.

Just when I thought Wieck's judgment in staff hiring decisions couldn't get any more pathetic, he does this.

Is it any wonder you guys are in the minority? I bet you wish there was some sort of affirmative action for senate republicans huh? Maybe then you can get ahead in Iowa.
