Convention week is upon us again. We Iowa Republicans will again attempt to convene this following Friday and Saturday (6.11-6.12) following last month’s flood postponement. Like last month, you’ll undoubtedly read and hear a lot of crazy rumors.
We here at TRS can easily dispel a couple of the larger fish tales swimming in our current political waters. The first “Wild on R” is that TRS himself is involved in a cabal to oust Chairman Iverson at the Convention. We’ve heard this one quite a bit over the Independence Day weekend. Such a “move” has been neither ideated nor entertained on this end. While we’ve been amused by the rumor it is, as usual, merely a red herring to distract the delegates from the real contests and issues before the convention.
Another is the existence of some kind of anti-McCain slate. Although we cannot deny the second rumor with the same degree of complete personal knowledge as we can the first, the “counter delegation” boogeyman seems equally whimsical. Once again, it appears that rumors of some insurgency that is designed to embarrass the nominee or make some ideological statement for the national media at the convention is a canard designed to discredit any nominee that isn’t pre-approved by party establishment leadership. Anyone whose candidacy for national delegate is known here at TRS understands that the position doesn’t permit any floor or media expression of disapproval of our nominee. Unless it is more deeply secret than the Pentavirate itself, there simply is no right wing anti McCain delegation.
More rumors will emerge and die, to be sure, this week so stay tuned for the fact or fiction filter here at TRS.
Coming tomorrow: a statement of issues for the Convention to consider.

The convention really ought to consider warrantless wiretaps, even if y'all just love the idea of retroactive immunity for the NSA's efforts to spy on everyone's overseas email for fun and profit (to the telecoms).
After all, the whole 4th amendment would appear to be at stake. Don't you like being secure in your privacy? We rebelled against King George over it once. Let's not this George roll back our revolution. ---Spotlight
Since I am not a Republican, I will not be at the Convention. I would like to make a proposal for the good of the order:
DUMP MCCAIN!
More convention business: Praise the success of the surge! Look at this evidence of success:
" Baghdad hasn't been this quiet in years. But the respite from bloodshed comes at a high price.
Up to 20 feet high in some sections.
Rows after rows of barrier walls divide the city into smaller and smaller areas that protect people from bombings, sniper fire and kidnappings. They also lead to gridlock, rising prices for food and homes, and complaints about living in what feels like a prison."
-------Spotlight
"Baghdad's walls are everywhere. They have turned a riverside capital of leafy neighborhoods and palm-lined boulevards into a city of shadows that separate Sunnis from Shiites.
The walls block access to schools, mosques, churches, hotels, homes, markets and even entire neighborhoods — almost anything that could be attacked. For many Iraqis, they have become the iconic symbol of the war."
"It takes my children an hour to get to school. I am often late for work, and there is never fewer than 10 cars in the line at the two crossing points."
The local Azamiyah economy, which suffered during the worst of the bloodshed, hasn't improved since the wall was built. The district's popular garment stores and kebab restaurants are still doing a fraction of the business they enjoyed before the war. Potential shoppers from other neighborhoods stay away, wary of the identity checks at the wall.
There are too few Azamiyah residents to sustain local commerce. About half of them fled the area in 2006 to escape the violence. Many have yet to return."

So Ted, are those that are delegates to the National Convention going to be long-time supporters of his who were with him early?
Or are they going to be the same tired old names like your new buddy Scheffler who has been to like 5 national conventions?
Be careful of getting to close to the bear, their fun to pet and wrestle with, but they can turn on you in a heartbeat.
As oppossed to the people like Marv Pomerantz, Stacy Cargill, Marlys Popma (who was there early on the payroll)?
Anon 7:35am has the post of the day.
sporie:
Of course I have no interest in an Iowa Republican Convention but I sure would like a financial interest in the crying towel concession.
Hey 7:35 and 9:10
Lifes a bitch when you can't insult, lie to, cheat and steal from people anymore and still expect to get their goodies.
Maybe those that want to go the convention should have used a bit more honey than blackmail threats of harm. How sophmoric. You sound like one of those losers that was bitter about not being in the cool kids clique in Junior High.
If Scheffler doesn't have any power, why do you assholes give a rats ass about the slate? The slate only works because Sheffler knows how to organize voters, apparently something you can't do (see voting results since 1994).
Marvin can run. You can run. Get your folks lined up and ask for their vote. Tell us why you are worthy.
Or, will you be out enjoying your life the day of the convention. Will you be just too dang busy to be there this weekend since you have a Life and all?
Will you be hanging out with Yepsen? The weather is supposed to be beautiful I hear. A good day to go about and just enjoy "life".
Is that why you are so bitter about the slate?
The ones that want a freebee to the convention are those that don't want to show up at the convention.
sporie:
You know I'm always looking to help out where I can.
I ran across the perfect slogan for your Convention, it was posted by another blogger and is from a bumper sticker:
"Where are we all going, and why are we in this handbasket?"
No thanks necessary, always glad to be of help.
11:45
I guess you don't want me at the convention. So I won't be there. Actually, since you are so adamant about it, how 'bout I don't show up to any more of your meetings. No more money. No more volunteering. No more votes for you.
Smart. Have fun organizing your slate.
Last time I checked, that's called winning the battle and losing the war. Good luck with that.
2:41
You show up? What's your bitch then? Why start the insults? What the hell is your problem? Why insult Sheffler and Sporer for no apparent reason?
Yea - stay home. You sound like part of the problem. You don't like any of those people anyway - it sounds.
Hows that McCain campaign working out so far, eh?
Sounds like the consultants have killed him. He has nothing to say. He's playing tea party politics. He inspires no one about anything.
At least let the christians have a party for all their hard work - albeit - useless effort - to turn the state red again.
If they don't show up - no one does, as the insulting poster from above demonstrates.
So when the chairperson of the committee to organize the convention refuses to communicate with his committee. Ignores all of their suggestions and does what he wants without running it past the committee. Ignores all requests to see what will be contained in that committee's report. And names himself as temporary chairperson of the convention... you don't think people should be suspicious that someone might try to make a person other than our current party chair the permanent chairperson of the convention? You don't think people should be concerned that things aren't going to go well at the convention? Nope, not a crazy rumor, it's a well founded suspicion of many.
When your buddy Sheffler promised big surprises at the convention, well that just confirms something weird is going on.
When that committees members start to question if everything is being done according to the rules; they are insulted and threatened.
Now, you tell me some good reasons that people should not be suspicious of you and your friends.
The next Polk County meeting should be held at Walnut Community Church. Ted and Sheffler can really feel at home.
Why doesn't Sheffler just call up McCain and say "John you might have gone through the motions to get nominated by the party for pres. But I demand you nominate me for VP and then I'll tell you what to do hmmmm
Ted...hate to tell you..but yes..there is an anti-McCain group forming up.
There was a national delegate candidate speaking at the Johnson County meeting last night that flat out stated he did not support McCain, would not be supporting McCain as the nominee and if a delegate would not be casting a vote in support of him.
Now..I should add this that the individual in question was the Natural Law Party/Libertarian Party candidate for Governor in 2002...who is now trying to pose himself off as a "conservative" Republican...
Don't be lumping the Natural Law floaters in with the Libertarians. There are many Republicans who do not like McCain and if he were not your nominee, you might actually have a chance this year.
Glenn Beck said it best "John McCain is about as conservative as a vegan florist at a yoga convention."
Ahhhhhhh. The GOP purification process is in full bloom. Old Scheffler has nothing on the Catholics though, they knew how to wipe out entire civilizations of non-believers and those who would not repent. Study your history boys. Throw us all out, one by one, us non-believers. Those who don't quite measure up to whatever "conservative" means the day you define it.
All rational thinking Republicans take cover, its going to get worse before it gets better. We can start an underground railroad for protection. Emerge from hiding after the November drubbing, and try very hard, to take this party back and give a home to the average citizen who wants less government, less taxes, and less religous zealots telling us how conservative we should be.
See you at convention. Remember the secret hand gesture to identify each other.
So what denomination will the new RPI be Uncle Ted?
Do I sign up for baptism now or wait until Saturday... just want to make sure I qualify.
VOTE FOR STEVE SCHEFFLER! OR DON'T GET INTO HEAVEN!
If Scheffler wins, it will show that the Democrats do not have a monopoly on stupid.
Oh Vlad,
Vote for Steve Scheffler and you will be saved!
It looks more like a bunch of old timers are bitching here long and hard about Scheffler, Sporer and the insurgents.
Isn't it Iverson and his group that has been forcing people out?
Didn't they run Sporer off, and then follow him and attack him after he left?
Wasn't it Roberts and Iverson who ridiculed Sporer behind his back at the last SCC meeting (over two months ago) because Sporer asked questions about the budget.
Weren't Iverson and his group the ones who put together that fake complaint about one of the Convention committees and then sprung it on Scheffler at an SCC meeting?
Isn't it Iverson and his people who are travelling around the state telling people that the conservatives are destroying the Republican Party?
You cry baby Eddie Haskells might just as well shut up, the delegates know who is killing the party.
It wasn't Scheffelr and Sporer who lost virtually every level of Republican contest in Iowa during the last ten years. Iverson is doing nothing but demonstrating as state Chair what the Senate already knew, which is why he was ousted as Majority Leader and why most of the Senate supported Sporer, Iverson is an inept divisive bully who cannot be trusted. He has created this fight, involved the Presidential campaign and sent surrogates like Keg Kearny out to attack people-just like he did in the Senate.
11:10--
It wasn't Scheffelr and Sporer who lost virtually every level of Republican contest in Iowa during the last ten years.
really?
cause they've been on the SCC that long...
It wasn't a fake complaint that was SIGNED by 6 members of that committee; go ahead, ask them when you see them at the convention with their little badges that say they were on it...
Having seen what went on there from 02 through 06 I can certainly assure you that things would be very different now had people listened to Sporer a lot more.
Sporer, Scheffler and just a couple of other members were constantly pushing for party reforms that would get more people involved, maybe fire up Republicans and beat up the Democrats. Those ideas usually passed by big margins and then the establishment just ignored them and gave different directions to the staff.
So, no you can't lay those defeats at Sporer's doorstep.
Scheffler almost always went along and tried to push the changes Sporer thought of. Scheffler pushed for us build the party around conservative ideas, which actually worked when we tried it.
Why they even bother I don't know.
I'll be there, but I cant support McCain. A McCain presidency would step on everything I believe in. The GOP would move to the left and America would go down the shitter.
I dont want Obama either, but I think if he is our president we will be able to turn the congress and senate in 2010 and easily win with a Huckabee or a Romney or even a Jindal in 2012.
See you there!
Scheffler voted for Stu Iverson.
Scheffler voted for Ray Hoffman.
Scheffler made Ray Hoffman hire those idiots to be E.D. and P.D and fundraisers.
Open your eyes. Scheffler has "received" much more in "reimbursements" than he ever has given to the party in contributions. Give me a break.
Sporer is getting used. Sad to see.
Sporer is a big boy. Anyone who has the guts to loudly swear in church at a ICA meeting..lets not feel to sad for TRS. Why is Sheffler using non-christians to do some of his dirty tricks? Can't he at least find someone in the ICA? TRS and Gopal are his pals! Three peas in a ????
don't you think that Gopal and Sporer's involvement proves that its not just a "Gods" against "mods" fight?
Listening to Scheffler, Gopal was made chairman of the previously mentioned committee that is having problems. Gopal is not communicating with his committee, according to that poster. He also has refused to share the report of his committee with his committee....
Nope, I don't think listening to Scheffler is a good idea.
This isn't Gods against Mods. It is rational libertarians and conservatives against the unctious religio whackjobs.
I have been asking this for a month now and nobody has been able to give me a straight answer...
DOES STEVE SCHEFFLER HAVE A REAL JOB?
What... you dont consider running the IA GOP into the ground, being a so called Christian who lies and goes behind people backs to gain power, and allying yourself and your so-called Christian organization with two people who could not care less about Jesus Christ a job? It takes a lot of work to destroy your once descent name and reputation on short notice.
post of the day goes to 7:06
Sorry, Vlad, but we're not "unctious religio whackjobs," but sincere moral conservatives who believe with this nation's founders that the purpose of government is to secure "certain unalienable rights," the first of which is life. GO STEVE DEACE!
8:03:
I agree to a point. The problem with unctious religio whackjobs like Scheffler and the Huckatard is that you would take money from my wallet at the point of a gun and use it to fund programs that soothe your conscience. Liberals take money from my wallet at the point of a gun and use it to benefit the collective good.
The unctious religios and the liberals end up accomplishing the same goal, the forcible extraction of money from my wallet at gunpoint.
And, let's face it, do you really want your kids coming home from school and saying that the earth is 6,000 years old?
Again...
DOES STEVE SCHEFFLER HAVE A REAL JOB?
One this for sure 8:03 is a wack job who bought into the liberal brain washing as a child. I suppose the earth has no creator too.
Sporer is it true that you will be making the speech placing Mark Klein, M.D.'s name in nomination for the Presidency?
Did anyone else see McAmnesty came out again for, well, amnesty?
And you wonder why I can't vote for the guy.
DOES STEVE SCHEFFLER HAVE A REAL JOB?
Wow, now there's a hot one! Sporer is going to the convention to place Mark Klein's name in nomination? Takes one to know one I guess.
The surprise guest at Sat. convention will be Gloria Steinam.
The ? is will she speak before or after Sheffler?
Steinam will speak AFTER Scheffler. After listening to Stevie, the convention will want to know how a real man delivers a speech.
DOES STEVE SCHEFFLER HAVE A REAL JOB?
When Steve Scheffler runs the party, I can't wait to see David Barton as the keynote speaker for every Lincoln and Reagan dinner.
Wooo hooo!
Vlad, Steve is a Professional Christian... yes, you can get paid for doing that. That's his job.
Also, did you know you can actually make a living on mileage from RPI. Dreams do come true!
I can not believe the utter BS that Scheffler, Lehman and Sporer are spewing on Deace right now..
1. The ICA meeting that they're claiming was "closed"..An email invite was sent out to the ENTIRE ICA email list inviting people to attend
2. Kim Lehman wants to run for National Committeewoman..oh really? Do we want someone that is supposed to be working for ALL of our GOP candidates who called one of our candidates a "wolf in sheep's clothing" on Steve Deace's radio show.
3. Who is this shadowy group that's supposedly working to "gut" the platform?
4. Oh..real classy there Sporer accusing good people like John Ortega and Bonnie Hall of something with absolutely no evidence of it either....I really want that in my leadership there Ted..
I can't believe Stu didn't haul off and jack one of those liars right in the face. That was an ugly several hours of talk radio that should be replayed this weekend for everyone to hear at the convention.
I thought there was a commandment against "false witness". Wonder how Ted, Steve, and Kim feel about that one?
I'd like to know who that fifth person was when Ted said it was 4 or 5 people, but only named 4? Maybe it was the un-named person #5?
Deace, you are going to wish you weren't friends with Scheffler... he is a class act manipulator who has lost his moral compass.
You should have asked him about proxy voting.
I think the McCainuses and the big "R" Republicans will be the ones gutting the platfom.
I'm a die-hard D, but I'll be very curious to read what happens at your convention. Sounds like it could be eventful.
They'd better have a sign to check your guns and knives at the door. There should be some fun fistfights to watch by afternoon. You gonna bring your boxing gloves Ted?
10:12 I wish that someone could play that show at the convention too. It will show Iverson is part of the problem with the Iowa GOP. He has failed to lead on many issues. If he had done what he is supposed to do we may not have SILO, the Smoke-Free Air Act, higher taxes, and many other destructive liberal programs. This show illustrated that Iverson lacks the backbone to defend himself, not to mention the state.
What was the point, it was 4 against 1, anything he had to say would have been contradicted 4 different ways.
Next time, have a balanced panel.
Al:
Hate to say it but Stew had NOTHING to do with the votes you mentioned. That was Mary "Eva Braun" Lunby and her ilk.
The only thing Stew might have been able to do (and, if I were a Republican and stupid enough to go to convention I would propose this) is to cut off all party funds to the people who voted in favor of it.
Al, since when did the state chair tell R elected how to vote? Somewho I thought they were elected to vote their district. Maybe you would prefer a commi state. Instead of elections, we appoint you TR,TS,SS,KL,G, to select reps. Sounds like you could bring Putin in as your consultant.
"Ilk" as in Brent Oleson? I thought he was kissing up pretty good to Stu since his meal ticket retired.
7:42 What the hell good does it do to have a party when no one votes for the issues set forth by the party platform. Using your line of thinking that document is virtually worthless. As for Iverson, he has failed to lead the party. Look at the disarray that has resulted from his so-called leadership. Let's face it the Republican Party of Iowa is facing a crisis of leadership or to be more exact, the lack of leadership. This is the point that people like myself are trying to point out but the good old boys in the party are happy with the status quo. Hello the status quo is what got it into trouble to begin with.
Al:
What the hell good does it do to have a party when no one votes for the issues set forth by the party platform.
That is why I am not a Republican. I got tired of asking myself that question every day the legislature was in session.
The Republican Party of Iowa needs new leadership. They need to oust Iverson to start with.
Things are falling apart because no one will line up behind Stew. Not because Stew is bad, but because they want to be in charge. Too many roosters and not enough hens.
Those that will not give the man a chance to do his job, those that wanted him out before he even came in.
They are the demise of our state party, no one else.
Stew was much more effective when he was a member of the Reichstag than as party chair. The competing egos have pretty much just made him a figurehead.
12:00 Is that all that you can do, call people names. Please grow up a little before you post again. Maybe then your post will sound more intelligent. Iverson is supposed to be leading the party, he has yet to do so. When he was still in the legislature he failed to lead, that is why he is not there any longer. Why then do we want him leading the party?
Al,
I'm assuming by "12:00" you really meant "10:12" (see previous post about being a jackass)...
I don't know why you keep fretting that Stew isn't a "leader". He's been raising money for Iowa Republicans, he's been working on a national level to ensure our caucuses are first, he's been working with campaigns throughout the state to get them what they need...
I mean, what is it you want???? Do you want him to beat everyone up who says they're a Republican but maybe they are't a SOCO voter first???
It makes no sense. You can't just say "he's not a leader--he sucks" and not give any reasons/instances to back it up.
Oh! And Al, Stew wasn't ousted from the Legislature because he "failed to lead". It was instead because his caucus voted him out because he was too CONSERVATIVE for them!!!
Girls, girls! Can't we all just get along? Go get a couple boxes of Midol would you?
The platform is written by the same freaks trying to take over the party. Most "republicans" who vote have never even read the damn thing - and they would disagree with quite a bit of it. If most of the "moderate" Repubs would vote ultra-conservative on every issue they wouldn't last more than one term. Then the Dems would have an even larger majority. You want an ultra-conservative agenda at the state level? Move to South Dakota. Otherwise you better learn to deal with the fact that Iowa has a moderate electorate - and they elect people to represent those views.
Screw You Anon 12:14!
The platform is the most important document in the Party!
Vote Scheffler! An you shal go to heaven!
Well time to get on the road for the convention.
i just wanted to be the 69th comment.
69! 69! 69! 69!
hahahahahah!!!!
Hey Guys and Gals-Uncle Sporer's family are democrats. Dad is a big demo in town!
